Stand Out in the Industry with an ECS Gold Card

The ECS FESS Systems Technician (Gold Card) is the recognised industry benchmark for experienced fire systems professionals who can demonstrate competence, compliance, and safe working to national standards.

Holding an ECS Gold Card demonstrates that you are qualified to work unsupervised within your scope, meeting the expectations of clients, principal contractors, and regulators in a tightening compliance landscape.

This route is particularly relevant for engineers already working in the industry who require formal recognition of competence through an industry-recognised qualification and assessment process.

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems

Course Code: 603/6194/3

This Ofqual-regulated Level 3 qualification develops knowledge, understanding, and occupational competence across the design, installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and auditing of electronic systems used within the Fire and Security sectors.

The qualification offers two specialist pathways, allowing learners to focus on their chosen discipline:

  • Pathway 1 – Fire Specialisation in electronic systems used in fire detection and fire alarm systems, aligned to BS 5839-1.

  • Pathway 2 – Security Specialisation in security systems, including intruder alarms, CCTV, and access control systems.

The qualification is suitable for apprentices and experienced engineers building formal evidence of workplace competence.

⚠️ Important clarification: While this qualification underpins professional competence across both pathways, only the Fire pathway forms part of the recognised Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) route mapped to the ECS FESS Systems Technician (Gold Card) at present.

Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) – Fire Pathway

The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is designed for mature, experienced fire systems engineers who have typically gained their skills on the job rather than through a traditional apprenticeship.

This route is only available for the Fire pathway and is subject to strict eligibility criteria.

Eligibility

  • Minimum five years’ full-time, verifiable experience working with fire detection and fire alarm systems

  • Suitable current employment to support workplace evidence and assessment

On successful completion, learners achieve:

  • FESS Systems Technician status

  • Eligibility to apply for the ECS Gold Card (subject to ECS application requirements)

As part of the Fire EWA route, the following must be achieved:

  • EAL NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems (Pathway 1 – Fire)

  • EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems for Buildings (BS 5839-1 – current edition)

  • EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems in Dwellings (BS 5839-6 – where applicable)

  • ECS Health, Safety & Environmental Assessment

  • In-centre Safe Isolation theory and practical assessment (unless already held)

  • Professional discussion to identify and close any skills gaps

Ongoing competence and renewal

For future ECS card renewal, engineers are expected to maintain:

  • Relevant manufacturer and product-specific CPD aligned to the systems they work on.

Security Pathway – Important Note

At present, the Security pathway (Pathway 2) of the EAL NVQ Level 3 Diploma does not map to the ECS FESS Systems Technician (Gold Card).

Engineers working primarily in security systems should seek guidance on recognised EWA routes available through alternative awarding organisations, subject to ECS requirements at the time of application.
