Many people use the terms "Fire" and "Security" interchangeably, but they are distinct professions with different regulations.

If you choose the Security pathway, your training will focus on the latest European and British standards to ensure you are installing "future-proof" systems:
Video Surveillance Systems (BS EN 62676 Series): Moving far beyond old analog CCTV, this standard governs the design and installation of modern Video Surveillance Systems (VSS). You’ll learn about image quality, storage requirements, and how to ensure a system actually meets the "operational requirements" of the client.
Electronic Access Control (BS EN 60839-11): This is the gold standard for access control. You will understand how to manage secure entry points, from simple keypad entry to complex biometric and networked systems, ensuring they are both secure and safe for users.
Intruder & Hold-up Alarms (BS EN 50131): Learn the grading system (Grade 1 to 4) that determines how a system must respond to different levels of threat and how it communicates with police and monitoring centers.
At LFS, we don't just teach you how to "wire a camera." We teach you the Compliance Roadmap.
In an industry where insurance companies and police response depend on these standards, being a technician who understands BS EN 62676 or BS EN 60839-11 makes you an invaluable asset. This knowledge is what separates a "handyman" from a Qualified Security Professional.
• British Standards (BS): The codes of practice that ensure safey and quality in the UK.
• Competency: Having the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to perform a task safely.
• Transferable Skills: Skills from previous jobs (like electrical or IT) that apply to this new career.Fire Industry Standards
• BS 5839-1: The "bible" for fire detection and alarm systems in non-domestic buildings.
• L-Categories: Systems designed to protect Life (e.g., L1, L2).
• P-Categories: Systems designed to protect Property (e.g., P1, P2).
Security Industry Standards
• BS EN 62676: The standard for Video Surveillance Systems (VSS/CCTV).
• BS EN 60839-11: The standard for Electronic Access Control Systems.
• BS EN 50131: The standard for Intruder and Hold-up Alarm systems.
• System Grading: Security systems are graded 1–4 based on the level of threat they are designed to handle.
